An Overview of Writing Workshop (PK-2)

Many students will identify themselves as readers but fewer will call themselves writers. How does the teacher go about creating a space where students see themselves as writers? Writing workshop can be theplace where writers have opportunities to make meaning, where revision is an opportunity, and where students read deliberately, collecting ideas and strategies through their journeys.

Writing workshop focuses on three key features: an emphasis on writing, a sense of community support, and individualized instruction and feedback to foster student growth as writers. The writing workshop curriculum focuses on lessons that are taught while students are actually engaged in authentic writing experiences. This emphasis on writing connects the instruction directly to the activities that students are completing.
